Narrative

For this project, I decided to do a simple illustration based off of a game I desire to make several years in the future. The narrative is basic and is simply of a small wizard walking through a landscape to meet his friend. The project was done digitally as one huge image, then collaged on the wall using 11x17 paper. I had a lot of fun working on this project, both in designing the landscape as well as seeing how he might interact with the environment. The buildings are influenced by those I've seen in Solvang, California, and everything pictured on the wall is something that hopefully will make it into the final product of the game in distant future.

Documentation

For this assignment, I decided to document the things that caught my interest while hanging out around the Ponce courtyard. There's a spot near the entrance not many travel by that allows someone sitting there a view inside the courtyard and outside to the street. Using a portable watercolor set, ink, and a ballpoint pen, I sketched and photographed various things that caught my eye around me, and documented them with these pen and watercolor drawings. The text below documents what about them caught my eye, and my general thoughts about the objects. This assignment was incredibly fun to complete and it was nice to sit and observe those passing by.

Drawing on Objects

For drawing on objects, I decided to draw upon a quote from Oscar Wilde.
"There is something terribly morbid in the modern sympathy with pain. One should sympathise with the colour, the beauty, the joy of life. The less said about life's sores the better."
-Oscar Wilde
Based on this quote I decided to take something associated with pain and put beautiful imagery on it. I also decided to create the weapon out of fabric and other sewing materials, so that while a mace is traditionally associated with violence and pain, it would be relatively useless for its original purpose.

Prepared Surfaces

For the first part of this assignment, I used ink, gesso, newspaper and woodglue to create various surfaces on top of eight different pieces of paper. To achieve the desired effect, paper was often folded or creased intentionally, and any materials on the surface were either applied with hands or with an eyedropper.

The second part of the project I began to make a series of images based off of feedback received in class. From my original surfaces I began to make prepared surfaces with newspaper and ink, creating my own Rorschach tests.

For the final part of this project, I took what I had learnt from the second part of this assignment and created the final piece composed of four multicolored Rorschach blots. I feel this final piece is extremely successful as a whole and each blot works successfully with each other and on their own.

Response Drawing

For this assignment I was required to listen to an episode of the podcast This American Life and draw based off of the contents of the episode. My approach to this assignment was to draw imagery and scenes that caught my attention throughout the episode. The result was an eclectic collection of various drawings and subjects shown here.

Memory Drawing

For this assignment I went about exploring my childhood home with my eyes closed using memory. The base of this project was done in blue sharpie during class. To add on to the drawing, I then added in marker and ink to color in the floorplan of the house. I then overlayed other places I have lived during my life in different colored marker, drawing them with my eyes closed as i did with the first layer.

Debris Drawings

There is a various assortments of debris behind my apartment complex. I ventured behind my apartment for this assignment to see what sort of items I might be able to find there. Among a blue bag with a comforter in it, two abandoned bikes, and a thousand shards of broken glass, I found items to compose into the following sculptures.

Rocky Road Traffic Cone

For this debris drawing I used two cinderblocks, a traffic cone, a plastic ball, and two bricks that had been strewn about behind the back of my apartment. I stacked the cinderblocks on top of one another, then placed the traffic cone upside down through the opening. To prevent the ball from falling through the opening, I stacked two bricks inside the cone then placed the ball on top.

Debris Drawing #2

For this drawing, I used a wooden platform behind my apartment complex, a garden hose, and a wilting plant. I uncoiled the gardening hose and draped it around the platform, letting it coil naturally as it pleased. I then placed the wilting plant in front of the end of the hose, to further emphasize its lack of water.
