Debris Drawings

There is a various assortments of debris behind my apartment complex. I ventured behind my apartment for this assignment to see what sort of items I might be able to find there. Among a blue bag with a comforter in it, two abandoned bikes, and a thousand shards of broken glass, I found items to compose into the following sculptures.

Rocky Road Traffic Cone

For this debris drawing I used two cinderblocks, a traffic cone, a plastic ball, and two bricks that had been strewn about behind the back of my apartment. I stacked the cinderblocks on top of one another, then placed the traffic cone upside down through the opening. To prevent the ball from falling through the opening, I stacked two bricks inside the cone then placed the ball on top.

Debris Drawing #2

For this drawing, I used a wooden platform behind my apartment complex, a garden hose, and a wilting plant. I uncoiled the gardening hose and draped it around the platform, letting it coil naturally as it pleased. I then placed the wilting plant in front of the end of the hose, to further emphasize its lack of water.

Spatial Drawings

Spatial Drawing 1

For this first piece I set out with no set goal in mind. My only task was to create a very gestural piece within the confines of my front porch in order to get a feel for the material. The final gesture implicates both a cage and a hammock, reflecting both the cozy and restrictive attributes of the apartment as a whole.

Spatial Drawing 2

For the second Spatial Drawing I became highly inspired from Peter Pan, particularly Peter's first entrance in the nursery hunting for his shadow. The tape is attached from the wall, to the floor, and ultimately to the bottom of the subject's foot. This allows the subject to be somewhat interactive with the sculpture as a portion of the work can be raised off the ground depending on the subject's motions.

Spatial Drawing 3

For the third spatial drawing I decided to reimagine an area within my house using already existing decor. Utilizing a display shelf in the home, I used blue painter's tape to emulate a fountain spilling out over the rim of the shelf and onto the floor below. I added the fish from a nearby shelf to further play with the idea of a flowing water source.
